THE ZEBULON RECORD Volume XXV Number 7 HELP THIS CHILD WALK AGAIN §uuk| This little girl would never have had even a fighting chance of learning to walk had it not been for the assistance given her by the League for Crippled Children; now she is struggling to lead a normal life, and has a better than even chance of winning. Children like this one, as well as others handicapped in any manner, are the re cipients of aid given through the Easter Seal campaign now underway in Zebulon. Contributions will be accepted by Miss Rebekah Talbert, Chief of Police Willie B. Hopkins, Principal Fred Smth, or Ferd Davis. Boy Scout Registration to Be Held At Scout Hut at 7:30 p.m. Tonight Scoutmaster Gordon Temple an nounced that he will be in the Scout Hut at 7:30 tonight to sup ervise a new registration of the names of boys in this community who plan to join the local Scout troop. Members of the Scout committee of the Zebulon Rotary Club will assist in the registration. The troop will be re-registered this week, and Scouts who belong ed in 1949 will have an opportunty to register as of January 1, so that their membership will be continuous and they will be eli gible for continuous service awards. The age limit of Boy Scouts has been lowered to 11 years, making a large group of boys eligible for membership who could not join the group previously. As soon as registration is com pleted, the Scoutmaster said, the Scouts will be divided into two groups according to their ages. Those 14 years and older will be placed in an Explorer Troop, and while they will meet with the rest of the troop for three meetings each month, the Explorers will meet by themselves frequently to plan their own Scouting program and camping. The Scout Committee has only three members at the present time. Chairman Barrie Davis stated that two additional members will be appointed Friday night to assist Craven Brown and Ed Ellington in supervising Scout planning. Missionary Here Miss Vivian Nowell of Wendell, Baptist missionary to Nigeria on the southeast coast of Africa, ad dressed members of the Baraca and Young Men’s Bible Classes of the Zebulon Baptist Sunday School during the lesson period last Sun day morning. Miss Nowell, who was introduc ed by Armstrong Cannady, showed a number of kodachrome slides to illustrate her talk. About 60 men were present. Zebulon, N. C., Tuesday, March 28, 1950 Three Men Seek Place on Board From East Wake The race for County Commis sioner from East Wake County be came a three-sided affair Saturday when Barrie S. Davis, war veteran publisher of the Zebulon Record, joined incumbent M. Wallace Chamblee of Zebulon and Billie S. Liles of near Wendell in seeking the post. The Wake County Board of Commissioners is composed of five members, one elected from each of the districts. M. Wallace Chamblee has been a member of the board since he was appointed to fill the unexpir ed term of D. B. Harrison. He has been re-elected for three terms. He stated that “I am offering my self as a candidate solely on my record as a member of the board for more than 12 years.” Deacon, AAA Worker Billie S. Liles is a farmer of near Wendell. He is chairman of the Junior Board of Deacons of Het)h zibah Baptist Church and has been an AAA committeeman for i Marks Creek Township for three j years. Barrie S. Davis is a combat vet eran who was elected to two terms on the Zebulon Board of Commis sioners following his release from active service. He resigned last year to organize the local unit of the National Guard, Battery A, 113 Artillery Battalion. He has been active in civic and church af fairs, and served as Scoutmaster i for three years. Wake ARC Meeting Gov. Scott to Address Governor Kerr Scott will be present and will address the hun i dreds of Red Cross volunteers at tending the first complete cam paign report meeting of the Wake County Red Cross 1950 Fund Drive. The meeting is being held at the Edenton Street Methodist Church tonight at 6:30 p. m. At this meeting each of the 12 divisions heading the 1950 drive will bring a complete report on progress to date. B. W. Haigh, Fund Chairman, announces that keen competition is spurring the efforts of the 12 groups conducting the solicitation. Many groups have already exceed ed their quotas. One group re ports 128 per cent of its quota col lected to date. The drive will continue through April 6. The 1950 quota for Wake County Red Cross is $46,000. Its goal: “Everyone a volunteer.” Legion Square Dance Held Saturday Night The number of dancers at the American Legion square dance held every Saturday night at the Zebulon bus station is growing larger every week, committeeman Gordon Temple said yesterday. He added that since the Zebulon Le gion Post has begun sponsoring the weekly affair, more publicity has been given to square dancing and new faces are seen on the floor. American Legion Post 33, com manded by Ralph Bunn, decided to sponsor the dance in order to raise funds for the post treasury. The new Legion unit is already the third largest in the county with 45 members, Adjutant Frank Mas sey expects to take over second place behind Raleigh Post No. 1 within the next two weeks. CANDIDATE Mrs ifpg life i Pictured is Robert Pleasants, who is seeking his second term as sheriff of Wake County in the current campaign. Pleasants de feated incumbent N. F. Turner and Jim Brown in the 1946 primary. He is opposed this year by James E. Watkins, brother of Woodrow Watkins of Zebulon. Motorists Urged To Take Test Now “Motorists whose last names be gin with N, O, P and Q have been slow in reporting for examination for renewal of their driver’s li censes,” Driver’s License Exami ner C. M. Hocutt of Zebulon stated today. Although one-half of the period has passed in which persons in this category are to be examined, only about one-fourth of those who must stand examination have re ported to the local station, Exami ner Hocutt pointed out. The N and Q period began Jan uary 1 and will continue through June 30. Examiner Hocutt stated that at present he has time to give imme diate attention to persons applying for renewals but as the deadline nears he expects to be rushed. He listed his daily schedule as follows: Zebulon, Monday and Tuesday. Wendell, Wednesday. Spring Hope, Thursday and Fri day. “To avoid the last minute rush, I urge all persons whose last names begin with N, O, P or Q and who have not obtained renewal of their driver’s licenses to report at their earliest convenience to their near est examining station,” Examiner Hocutt stated. Franklin County Welfare Worker Addresses Rotarians on Recreation The benefits of a community recreation program in providing wholesome entertainment for the whole community and in combat ting juvenile delinquency were stressed by Miss Lucy Burt of Louisburg, who spoke before the Zebulon Rotary Club Friday night. She appeared as the guest of Ed Hales, program chairman. The speaker told of preliminary plans for the recreation program and of the formation of a com munity council which carried these plans to completion. Everyone in louisburg pitched in and helped, Miss Burt stated. Those who could not help outside were placed on telephone commit tees to call everyone to special meetings and urge participation in fund campaigns. After three years the Town of Louisburg provided funds for the Theo. Davis Sons, Publishers Local Lions Plan The Biggest Social Event o! Season The Womanless Wedding, spon sored by the Zebulon Lions Club, will be held Friday night in the Wakelon School Auditorium, with the opening strains of the Wedding March wafting over the assembled spectators at about 7:30 or as soon thereafter as the bride can find herself a groom. Certain Lions are hiding their blushing faces this week as they try pink panties and other unmen tionables for size. False eyelashes, false teeth, false hair, and other false items are being added for sex appeal. A Shotgun Affair M. L. Hagwood is directing the wedding with his everready shot gun in hand. “Nobody is going to do wrong by little Eva,” he said, emphasizing his statement by banging the butt of his shot gun on the floor. “Little Eva,” is re ported to tip the scales at 275 pounds. Worth Hinton is supervising the special entertainment, including the s : neig n.dancing. and lovemak ing. “It'll be a hot time,” he paus ed long enough to tell us. “Tell the ladies to pull their girdles tight or I^o v will split their sides from laughing.” Potato Growing Facts Given by SC Service The last week of March or the first week of April is the ideal time for Zebulon farmers to bed sweet potatoes from which to ob tain sprouts for setting the 1950 crop, says H. M. Covington, ex tension horticulturist at State Col lege. Farmers who grow their own sprouts stand a much better chance of producing top-quality, disease free potatoes, states- Covington. Most diseased potatoes at harvest, he says, are caused by diseased po tatoes having been bedded. “If it becomes necessary to buy sprouts,” asserts the horticulturist, “know the source of seed and the conditions under which the sprouts are grown. Cheap plants usually are the most expensive in the long run.” In selecting potatoes for bedding, the following points should be observed: Do not bed anything having rotten spots or shriveled (Continued on Page 4) recreation program with an eight mil tax levy. This more than paid the SSOO in expenses incurred last summer. Included in the recreation pro gram are two teen-age clubs, a softball program, a playground, trips to the Wake Forest swim- New Movie Manager Buddy Hill is new manager of Wakelon Theatre, succeeding James Wiggs, who resigned the position to become publicity mana ger for “The Prince of Peace,” re ligious movie which was shown in Zebulon a few weeks ago. The new manager is experienced in theatrical work, coming here from Wake Forest. His father has been in show business for over 30 years. Hill is staying in the M. G. Crowder home.
